What to Expect at Your First Orthodontic Appointment

Booking your first orthodontic appointment is a big step and it’s completely normal to arrive with a head full of questions. Will it hurt? How long will treatment take? What happens next?

The good news is that your first appointment is much more relaxed than most people expect! Here’s exactly what to expect, so you can walk in feeling confident.

Before You Arrive

No special preparation is needed before your first appointment. If you wear braces or have had previous orthodontic treatment, it’s helpful to bring any relevant records such as X-rays and treatment summaries. But we can also arrange these ourselves if needed.

If you’re bringing a child, let them know beforehand that the appointment is just for looking and talking, nothing will be done to their teeth at the first visit. This helps manage any nerves and makes the experience a positive one from the start.

What Happens During the Appointment?

A Warm Welcome

Our team will greet you and take some basic details if it’s your first time visiting. We’ll ask about your dental and medical history, any concerns you have about your smile, and what outcome you’re hoping for. This is genuinely useful information – it helps us understand your priorities, not just your teeth.

A Thorough Examination

Your orthodontist will carry out a comprehensive assessment of your teeth, bite, and jaw. This typically includes:

  • Examining how your teeth sit and how your bite comes together
  • Assessing jaw alignment and any asymmetry
  • Checking for crowding, spacing, crossbites, overbites, underbites, or open bites
  • Reviewing the health of your gums and soft tissue

This is a thorough but comfortable process – there are no drills, injections, or anything uncomfortable involved.

Diagnostic Records

Depending on what the examination reveals, your orthodontist may take diagnostic records at this appointment. These typically include:

  • Digital X-rays – to show the position of teeth, roots, and any unerupted teeth beneath the gum line.
  • Digital scans or impressions – to create a detailed 3D model of your teeth, which helps plan treatment accurately.
  • Photographs – of your teeth and profile, used as a baseline reference and for treatment planning.

At some practices, records are taken at a separate appointment. At Ethos, we aim to complete as much as possible in one visit to save you time.

Your Treatment Consultation

Once the assessment is complete, your orthodontist will walk you through what they’ve found. This is the conversation where you’ll learn:

  • What orthodontic issues have been identified and what they mean
  • Which treatment options are appropriate for your situation
  • What each option involves – how it works, what it looks like, and what life is like during treatment
  • An estimated treatment duration for each option
  • A clear breakdown of costs and payment plan options

This part of the appointment is a genuine conversation. Your orthodontist will take the time to answer your questions and make sure you feel confident and informed. There’s no rush and no pressure to decide anything on the day.

What Treatment Options Might Be Discussed?

Depending on your situation, your orthodontist may recommend one or more of the following:

  • Braces – the most versatile option, effective for a wide range of cases. Available in metal or Clarity ceramic at Ethos.
  • Invisalign – clear removable aligners, popular with teens and adults who want a discreet option. Ethos is a Platinum Elite provider.
  • Ethos Lite – a targeted aligner solution for mild to moderate cases, focused on the front teeth.

Your orthodontist will explain which options are suitable for your specific case and help you weigh up the differences in a way that makes sense for your lifestyle and goals.

How Long Does the First Appointment Take?

A first appointment at Ethos typically takes between 45 minutes and one hour, depending on what’s involved. If diagnostic records are being taken, it may be slightly longer. It’s worth blocking out a little extra time so you don’t feel rushed.

Do I Have to Commit to Treatment on the Day?

Absolutely not. The first appointment is about information – giving you everything you need to make a confident, considered decision in your own time. Many patients take a few days to think it over, discuss it with a partner, or review the costs before deciding to proceed.

There’s no obligation, no pressure, and no follow-up calls pushing you to decide. When you’re ready, we’re here.

What Happens After You Decide to Proceed?

Once you’ve decided to go ahead with treatment, we’ll book your fitting appointment. This is when braces are placed, or when Invisalign aligners are ordered and fitted. Your orthodontist will walk you through what to expect at that appointment too, so you’ll always know what’s coming next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with Ethos Orthodontics at any of our 13 Queensland locations.

Will treatment start at the first appointment?

Not usually. The first appointment is for assessment and consultation. Treatment begins at a separate fitting appointment, once you’ve decided to proceed.

Should I bring anything to my first appointment?

No special preparation is needed. If you have previous dental X-rays or records, bring those along – but it’s not essential.

How long until I can start treatment after the first appointment?

This varies depending on treatment and clinic availability. For braces, fitting can often be arranged within a few weeks. For Invisalign, aligners are custom manufactured, which typically adds a few additional weeks before the fitting appointment.

Can both my child and I be assessed at the same appointment?

This depends on scheduling. Contact your nearest clinic and let them know – we’ll do our best to accommodate your family in a way that’s convenient for you.
