Every parent knows the feeling of watching their child’s smile evolve. From the first toothless grin to the awkward phase of growing teeth and… maybe even a few gaps along the way.

But then comes the big question: When should I start thinking about braces? Braces can play a crucial role in a child’s long-term oral health, and timing can make all the difference.

While every child is different, there are some general age guidelines that can help you know when to book that first appointment. And it’s probably earlier than you think!

Why Age 7 Is the Magic Number

Many parents assume orthodontic visits can wait until the teenage years, but this is not the case. The Australian Society of Orthodontics recommends that children first visit an orthodontist at the age of seven.

This doesn’t mean your child will need orthodontic treatment such as braces right away, but it helps to spot any early signs of jaw or bite concerns while their face is still developing. Timing is very important to understand what’s best for their smile.

When Most Kids Actually Get Braces

On average, children will begin orthodontic treatment with braces between the ages of nine and fourteen. This is the time when most of the permanent teeth have come in and the child’s mouth is still growing, making it easier to correct any alignment problems. In some cases, children may need orthodontic treatment as early as seven years old if they are experiencing severe bite problems or other health issues.

It’s important to note that not all children will need braces. Some children will have naturally straight teeth and do not require any orthodontic treatment. While others may have minor alignment issues that can be corrected without the need for braces. As a general rule, it’s always best to see a professional if you have concerns sooner rather than later.

Not sure? Start with an Orthodontic Consultation

If you are unsure about whether your child needs orthodontic treatment, speak to your family dentist as soon as possible. Alternatively, you can book an appointment with the friendly Ethos Orthodontics team, no referral needed! We might even have a clinic near you.

At your first consultation, we will focus on the progress of your child’s tooth loss, the size and shape of their jaw and any potential problems that may arise in the future. We also take the time to make sure your child feels safe and comfortable, a new environment can be a little daunting.

If there’s nothing of concern during your child’s first appointment, the orthodontist will likely put you on a scheduled recall and will see you at a later date when your child is older. This provides you with peace of mind, knowing that you will not miss the optimal window to fix your child’s teeth so they can enjoy a straight, healthy smile for years to come.
