What to Expect
ethos – an experience like no other
The ethos experience is all about putting our patients’ minds at rest and helping you feel relaxed and comfortable with your choice. We want your treatment time to be as perfect as the smile that emerges after!
We respect your time and won’t keep you waiting. At ethos, we’ll see you at your designated appointment time, except in the rare case when there is an unavoidable patient emergency. We’re not just expert orthodontists, we’re pretty good timekeepers too!
Naturally, we’ll also go the extra mile to make sure you feel comfortable. Not just with the treatment appliance you wear, but with the quality of care you receive – and the level of confidence you feel.
an initial consultation
Your initial consultation is all about getting to know you, and helping you understand your treatment options. Your orthodontist and treatment coordinator will explain the whole process for you there and then. Find out more about your first visit.
If you decide to go ahead, and depending on your treatment, we may need to take some impressions, x-rays or photos of your teeth. It’s a quick and painless appointment with our dental assistant and oral hygienist that will help us give you a more accurate, tailored diagnosis.
your fitting appointment
If you’re expecting your fitting to be painful, we’ve got some good news for you. Whether you choose Invisalign, Incognito or braces, it’s a pain-free experience. Find out how braces are fitted in our FAQs.
Your initial fitting appointment only takes about 45 minutes – just enough time to make sure your mouth is comfortable and give you some guidance on how to care for your new appliance.
In the days immediately after fitting, you may experience some discomfort as your teeth start to move and your mouth and tongue adjust to the new appliance. That’s completely normal. We’ve got some tips – and some wax – we can share with you that will help with the discomfort.
Very quickly you will adapt to your new appliance – and will probably forget it’s there most of the time.
To adjust your appliance, or to fit the next stage of your treatment, you will need to come back for follow-up appointments. (The cost is included in your treatment plan.) These appointments typically only take about 10 minutes, so can easily fit in around your busy life.
Your debanding appointment is the time to take off your braces and celebrate your new smile! It’s also the start of your retention treatment, when you will be fitted with a fixed alloy retainer. This will help keep your teeth in place, and your treatment on track.
Depending on the work you’ve had done, we may need to see you every one-two years for a check up, but your orthodontist will be happy to discuss a maintenance plan with you.
While the total duration of treatment varies according to your teeth and treatment method, it is usually between 12 and 24 months. A small price to pay for the a fantastic smile, improved function and long-term health benefits.
