It's true, orthodontic emergencies are rare but if something feels loose or broken, don’t panic! Just call our practice to schedule an appointment to have it fixed. However if you're away on holidays, you may be able to temporarily solve it yourself until we see you next time.
Here are a few tips and tricks!
Poking wire: Using a pencil eraser or the end of a match stick, push the poking wire down or place wax on it to ease the discomfort.
Loose bracket or band: If your bracket or band is still attached to the wire, you should leave it in place and put wax on it.
Loose wire: Using tweezers, try to put your wire back into place. If doing this and using wax does not help, as a last resort use a small fingernail clipper to clip the wire behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. If the discomfort continues place wax on it.
General soreness: When you get your braces on, you may feel general discomfort in your mouth and teeth may be tender for three to five days. Remember this is perfectly normal.
If tenderness is severe, ibuprofen or paracetamol will relieve it. The lips, cheeks and tongue may also become irritated for one or two weeks as they toughen and become accustomed to the surface of the braces. You can put wax on the braces and use a warm salty rinse. We can show you how, if you have any troubles doing this.
As you see wax can be a great way to stop any irritation in the mouth, so don't forget to pack some wax on your next holiday!
